National Strategy on the Management of Disaster and Climate Induced Internal Displacement

The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief (MoDMR) has recently framed a strategy for providing support to the climate change affected displaced persons. The document entitled National Strategy on the Management of Disaster and Climate Induced Internal Displacement was initiated by the Comprehensive Disaster Management Programme (CDMP II) and UNDP. The document was prepared by a team of RMMRU researchers, Dr. Tasneem Siddiqui, Mohammad Towheedul Islam and Zohra Akhter. The study team chalked out detailed strategic responses to deal with displacement in three distinctive phases – (i) pre-displacement, (ii) displacement and (iii) post-displacement. This Strategy does not cover the entire spectrum of migration rather focuses on internal displacement caused by climatic hazards. The Strategy was prepared through a consultative process. Policy makers, climate change, migration and disaster management experts, bilateral and multilateral development partners, grass root NGOs and people of affected areas were part of the process. RMMRU is privileged to get the opportunity to draft such an important strategy document and extends its thanks to CDMP II.
