Social Cost of Migration on the Left-behind Elderlies and Siblings

2022-2023

The Social Cost of Migration on the Left-behind Elderly and Siblings project is supported by Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). Following the previous SDC and RMMRU research on left-behind husband, wife and children conducted in 2020, the study attempts to provide a deep understanding on the social costs borne by two distinct households, elderlies and siblings. The study has brought special attention to all the members of the left-behind families of migrants as not all members are impacted in the same way. It varies on the basis of gender, age, economic status, role in family decision making etc. In other words, the migration outcomes would vary among the left-behind family members on the basis of relationship of the member with the migrant, among those who have access to household decision making and the others who do not. The study will cover international, internal and non-migrant households of 20 districts of Bangladesh. The study will look into the social cost of left-behind elderlies and siblings who have been affected by different climatic events.

The objectives of the study are

• The broad objective of the research is to generate knowledge on impact of international and internal migration on the left-behind parents, grandparents, other elderlies as well as siblings.
• Combined with the previous SDC and RMMRU research on left-behind husband, wife and children this study will provide evidence to the policy makers, civil society activists and development partners to integrate the interest of left-behind household members in national planning, particularly in migration related policies.
