Press Conference on
The Patterns and Trends of Labour Migration from Bangladesh in 2023: Achievements and Challenges
Organized by: Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit (RMMRU)
Supported by: The Asia Foundation
Date: Wednesday, January 31, 2024
Venue: Tofazzal Hossain Manik Mia Hall, National Press Club, Dhaka

RMMRU organised a press conference to disseminate a report on “The Patterns and Trends of Labour Migration from Bangladesh in 2023: Achievements and Challenges,” which took place on January 31, 2024, at the Tofazzal Hossain Manik Mia Hall, National Press Club, Dhaka. Dr. Tasneem Siddiqui, Founding Chair of RMMRU and Chairperson of the Department of Political Science, University of Dhaka, presented the report. The report is divided into six sections: labour migration from Bangladesh-2023, reflection on important Issues in the migration sector, service-providing organizations, changes in laws and policies related to migration, migrant protection according to international law, and civil society initiatives.

Unveiling the report, Dr. Tasneem Siddiqui said that 13,05,453 Bangladeshi workers migrated abroad in 2023, which is the highest in the last 48 years, a milestone in terms of the number of workers migrating abroad in a calendar year. She also said that overall labour migration increased by 13 per cent, but remittance increased only by 2.88 per cent as Bangladesh earned 21.91 billion US dollars in remittance this year. The report shows that compared to 2022, workers' migration to the top-receiving country, Saudi Arabia, declined by 15.88 per cent to 4.97 lahks last year, while migration to Malaysia increased by 22.53 per cent to 3.51 lakh. The number of female migrant workers declined by 27.45 per cent to 76,519 last year, compared to 1,05,466 in 2022. This year, the largest number of workers went to Saudi Arabia, but as the remittance-sending country, it is in second place. The highest number of remittances usually comes from the KSA every year. However, this year, the largest amount came from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Md. Salim Reza, a full-time member of the National Human Rights Commission, graced the conference as the chief guest. At the conference, he emphasised skill migration; he said, “migration of skilled workers only could help eliminate exploitation in destination and increase remittance income.”

RMMRU made a set of suggestions, most importantly declaring 2025-2035 as the decade of migration. It also urged observance of December 18 as Migrants' Day, as declared by the United Nations, instead of the newly-introduced 'National Expatriate Day”. 90 journalists from different electronic and print media were present at the press conference, and 36 electronic and print media covered the news as the prime news of the day.
