Project Title: Reducing Irregular Migration and Supporting Returnees in Bangladesh
Duration: 15 months
The Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit (RMMRU), in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), is implementing a project titled "Reducing Irregular Migration and Supporting Returnees in Bangladesh." This initiative is undertaken in partnership with the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment (MoEWOE), Bureau of Manpower, Employment, and Training (BMET), Wage Earners’ Welfare Board (WEWB), and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC). The project is funded by the Government of Italy.
RMMRU will executive this project in two districts: Faridpur and Shariatpur. Over a 15-month period, the project aims to raise awareness about safe migration and mitigate the risks associated with irregular migration in these areas. Additionally, it seeks to support communities that are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change by focusing on sustainable internal resettlement options, disaster affected and climate-resilient alternative livelihood opportunities. The focusing activities of this project are establishment & operationalize of Migration Information and Registration Service Booths (MIRS), Strengthening the capacity of Union Digital Centers (UDC), Migrations awareness by pot song and graffiti at community level, Rapid Screening Returnee Migrants Identification & providing relevant support, Sustainable reintegration providing for returnee migrants, disaster & climate affected people, Strengthening the capacity of vulnerabilities and formation of Returnee Forum at Union & District Level.
Objectives of the Project:
- Strengthen safe migration pathways in Bangladesh through awareness-raising initiatives.
- Support the sustainable reintegration of returnees.
- Provide alternatives to irregular migration.
Sustainability Plan:
The project is designed to ensure long-term impact by focusing on the reintegration of returning migrants through enhanced community engagement and capacity building at the local level. Collaboration with grassroots organizations, such as Migrations Beneficiaries Platform Organization will foster community involvement and build volunteer platforms to strengthen support systems.
Key sustainability strategies include:
- Strengthening stakeholder capacity through training and engagement.
- Building networks with local governments and organizations.
- Establishing sustainable business opportunities to ensure socio-economic stability for returning migrants.
By addressing both migration-related challenges and disaster & climate vulnerabilities, the project seeks to promote a holistic approach to achieving long-term resilience and stability for affected communities.
